What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

Installed Scoop on Westhost.com VPS...

A lot of trial and error in this install but I got Scoop to work on a Virtual Private Server account at WestHost.com.
First, I cut my teeth on Microsoft, so this was my first real venture into Unix. Got a first rate lesson on SSH, CPAN, CHMOD, TAR, MYSQL, PHP, Perl, FTP -> you name it!.
The thing about a VPS install is you do not have root access so you have to do all these tricks to get around not having write access to certain directories. I don't know what impact these changes have on the integrity and security of the website. Any insights will be appreciated.
- Redhat Linux
- Apache/1.3.27
Hope this helps...
Oh, my site is called blue frog group. Still using the default templates and stylesheets. I'm just now getting into the customizing part so it may go up and down while I develop it.

Macros leading to Boxes with Arguments

I'm trying to set up a macro that users can use to grab a subset of data from a database, and it appears that the easiest way to format the data is to put it in a box. However, the box takes an argument, and I'm having trouble getting a macro that passes an argument to a box to work.

Hey everyone. My name is thor and I just got my new, shiney domain at samsdeadfishclub.com...I love dailykos.com and was digging around for the template in the code of the site and found the scoop site.
I really want to set my site up like this for several reasons, mainly it's going to be a "club," but I can't understand anything. Such as how to go about installing all of this stuff. I am very green to these things. SQL and Apachi might as well be greek.
I only have windows, is it even possible? The thing I get the most confused about is how/what files I would upload to my server and how to install them. oh man, I guess it might just be too difficult for me to do, any suggestions/tips/insults/ideas?

GNU Aspell is a spell checker designed to eventually replace Ispell. It can either be used as a library or as an independent spell checker. Its main feature is that it does a much better job of suggesting possible replacements for a misspelled word than just about any other spell checker out there for the English language. Unlike Ispell, Aspell can also easily check documents in UTF-8 without having to use a special dictionary. Aspell will also do its best to respect the current locale setting. Other advantages over Ispell include support for using multiple dictionaries at once and intelligently handling personal dictionaries when more than one Aspell process is open at once

In a macro that calls a box, the boxularity is evaluated before the variables, so it is impossible to call a parameterized box from a macro.

There is no God. Of any kind. There is no mysterious force guiding me and everything else in any particular direction. Rather, no conscious force. I accept that there is a small possibility of this, it's just highly unlikely, all religions have about the same likelihood of being true. It would be foolish for me to think there was a God, after all, there is no proof. The only reason to believe in God, in any religion, is because I am told to do so. Told to by the majority of the society. Told that I am supposed to think and act in a certain way. I try to be an analytical thinker. I try to think for myself. I decide what is right and wrong. I decide how I think and act as best I can.
