How do you convert potential users (ie set-my-own-site-uppers) and developers of Scoop into actual ones?

Potential users don't know what Scoop can do until they install it themselves - although signing up to all the Yasses will give them some idea...

Potential developers are likely to be attracted by the internals of the system, how do they get access to them? by installing.

Both parties are especially interested in the admin functionality of the site, which they cannot see simply by being an end-user.

The way to reduce the barriers to someone becoming a user or developer? Easy, set up a 'try-before-you-buy' site with a public admin password that allows them to see the internals without having to go through the hassle of doing a full install.

Read on to see the cunning part...

The cunning part is that you set up a cron job to purge the database and restore it to a pristine condition every hour/day/week etc.

This way little sticky finger monkey boys (and girrls) can poke and play and screw up and generally nogoodnik everything until they are hooked, at which point they will be begging the 'man' to give them their own fix.

Now there is obviously another problem in that I would imagine some of the admin functionality (ie blocks I think) would allow the little swine to take control of the whole box so I'll leave that for you experts to ponder.

This is a damn good idea... (none / 0) (#1)

if only because I would love to see what the heck would happen to the site. I may set this up on my home box(!) -- a very stupid idea I know, but I am sooo tempted. But seriously, you think the "boxes" section could be used to attack my (ahem) box?

Crip.
