Polls : Types : Single-Choice / Multi-Choice : IRV / AV / Condorcet etc. Feature Requests

The current single-choice polling model is proving inadequate. e.g.
  • A poll format that allows multiple boxes to be checked at once is required.
  • Polls allowing ranked choices will also become required.

Sophisticated discussions are being ham-strung by un-sophisticated polls. This is a serious problem in the political arenas where there is often no single "correct" answer or the direction to be taken must involve many variable inputs to be weighed.

In addition to Types of Choices allowed, Types of Analysis will also be required. Current Poll technology allows only for plurality analysis. Analysis based upon Instant Runoff, Approval voting, and Condorcet analysis will be required to be applied to the results of the choices.

These features are cutting edge. The first websites that incorporate these technologies will have a competitive advantage.

For details on the various analysis techniques see ElectionMethods.org.

surveys and multi-question polls (4.00 / 1) (#1)
by phr on Sun Jan 04, 2004 at 05:53:29 AM PST

Stuff like Condorcet is for elections (choosing a single winner in some high stakes question).  Polls on discussion sites are more to get a feel for user opinion.  Rather than more sophisticated polls I think simplerones are needed.  Two things I find missing from many web poll systems:
  1. Multi-question polls: you want to ask several questions (age, handedness, hair color, favorite programming language) in the same poll, and be able to record each answer, so you can find out how many left-handed blond users in their thirties prefer Perl.  The different ways of concocting substitutes for this (involving making one giant question that's a cross product of all the questions you really want to ask) are ok in theory but stink in practice.
  2. Surveys.  I usually like these much better than polls.  Diaryland does a pretty nice job of this, though more improvements are possible.  Surveys differ from polls because the answers are free text, not check boxes.  You ask a bunch of questions (your age, your hair color, what was the first interesting program you wrote, your favorite language) and the answer for each one is a free text field.  Viewers can then see all the answers for a given question, or can see the entire set of answers for a particular user.

strangely enough (5.00 / 1) (#3)

Exactly the reason why I stopped over here was to suggest this very thing. It seems like a site where so many people agree on the advantages of different voting methods ought to put those same voting methods to use. When making a poll, one should be able to select simple/approval/condorcet at the least. All the talk about these methods has whet my appetite to see them in action - surely I'm not alone?
