DigitalEarth.org Announcements

DigitalEarth.org was conceived of as a Slashdot for the Digital Earth.  We use the term Digital Earth as a catch all for talking about the environmental information infrastructure, which includes technology to connect geographic data, environmental models, and visualizations.  We don't envision the Digital Earth literally, i.e. as a monolithic system or entity; rather we view it as the process of connecting together information about the planet.

DigitalEarth.org is just a weblog.  It is not an organization, nor is it affiliated with the Digital Earth Initiative, which was previously both part of the NASA and an independent set of international workshops.  We have chosen the name Digital Earth because it is catchy and we wanted to pay homage to the efforts of some of the pioneers of the spatial data infrastructure.  This site was developed as a collaborative effort of two non-profits: the Open Planning Project and the GeoData Alliance.

Is DigitalEarth.org about GIS?  Sort of.  We like to think of it is as a site about the future of GIS.  Or maybe as a site about what happens as GIS adapts to the Internet.  Or maybe it is a site for people who are dissatisfied with GIS as a product category and would like it to be integrated into mainstream information technology.  This is what we mean by `sort of.'
