Caching index pages Feature Requests

It seems only story pages are cached, not index pages, according to the Scoop Administrators Guide on Page Caching.

Why is this? Is it because it's difficult to keep track of changes and know when the cache copy is old?

If that's the reason, a very simple solution would be to have index-page caching where refreshing is not based on changes, instead the cache copies are very short-lived. A cache copy could be considered unusable if it's older than 15 seconds (admin adjustable).

Even if surges in traffic are very unusual, when they do occur, even this very short-lived cache copy could make a great difference. Recalculating the page four times a minute is far better than doing it several times a second.

On most sites this would of course mean that index-page caching is practically always wasted. Copies are almost always written to disk and almost never re-used. But this doesn't matter since this happens when there are few visitors and there's bandwidth to spare.

Caching index pages | 1 comment (1 topical, 0 hidden)
memcached (none / 0) (#1)

I was just thinking about this yesterday.

Someday, it would be awesome to just write the pages out to memcached. There *are* some parts of the index page that are not static. The comment count comes to mind. Dunno how the page would render - maybe just render most of the page to memcached and *then* allow some kind of keyword substitution before it goes out to the browser.
